Explorers
The South Metro Fire Rescue Explorers Program gives young individuals, ages 16 to 21, the unique opportunity to get an inside look at the fire service and experience what it is like to be a firefighter through hands-on training and career development activities. Explorers learn about the physical and mental demands of being a first responder and the various opportunities a career at SMFR offers.
In June of 2005, the Parker Fire Protection District, in cooperation with Learning for Life, launched its Explorers Program, giving 15 individuals the chance to gain experience in the fire service. In 2008, the PFPD consolidated with SMFR, which has continued to operate and grow the program since. The program operates under the department's Training Bureau and is taught by experienced firefighters from around the district. Explorers typically meet three times a month, with most trainings consisting of an “academy style” workout in the department’s CrossFit bay and hands-on training on the drill ground.
Through the program, Explorers get the opportunity to learn about the equipment and skills utilized by firefighters daily and the requirements of a career in the fire service. Some of the things Explorers get to learn and experience include:
- Donning full firefighter bunker gear, including Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
- Hose deployments and water supply
- How to safely carry, throw, and climb ladders
- Victim removal
- Live fire training scenarios
- Basic medical skills
- Participating in department ride-alongs
- Assisting with line trainings
- Participating in community events & public safety education
- Completing a task book with detailed skill sheets and assignments
