Explorers

The South Metro Fire Rescue Explorer Program gives young individuals, ages 16 to 21, the unique opportunity to get an inside look at the fire service and experience what it is like to be a firefighter through hands-on training and career development activities. Explorers will learn about the physical and mental demands of being a first responder and the various opportunities a career at SMFR offers.

History of the Program

In June of 2005, the Parker Fire Protection District, in cooperation with Learning for Life, launched its Explorers Program, giving 15 individuals the chance to gain experience in the fire service. In 2008, the PFPD consolidated with SMFR, which has continued to operate and grow the program since. The program operates under the department's Training Bureau and is taught by experienced firefighters from around the district. Explorers typically meet three times a month, with most trainings consisting of an “academy style” workout in the department’s CrossFit bay and hands-on training on the drill ground.

What Explorers Learn

Through the program, members will get the opportunity to learn about the equipment and skills utilized by firefighters on a daily basis and the requirements of a career in the fire service. Some of the things Explorers get the chance to learn and experience include:

  • Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) use
  • How to use ropes and tie knots
  • Hose management and water supply
  • How to safely carry, place, and climb ladders
  • Basic emergency management training
  • Live fire training scenarios
  • Participating in line trainings and ride-a-longs
  • Interacting with department personnel at ceremonies and community events
