The South Metro Fire Rescue Board of Directors is proud to announce the selection of John Curtis as the next Fire Chief of South Metro Fire Rescue.

“This was an extensive and thoughtful process, and we are excited to move forward with Chief Curtis as the leader of South Metro Fire Rescue,” said Jim Albee, Board Chair of South Metro Fire Rescue. “His deep experience, strategic leadership, and commitment to our mission made him the ideal candidate to lead the organization into the future.”

Chief Curtis has been a dedicated leader at South Metro Fire Rescue for over two decades. In his current role as Deputy Chief of Emergency Services, he oversees operations, EMS, dispatch, fleet services, and special operations, ensuring operational excellence while advocating for fire service priorities at the local, state, and federal levels. He holds a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership and a Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology from the University of Colorado. He is also a graduate of the Fire Service Executive Development Institute (FSEDI).

The selection process began in January 2024 following Chief Bob Baker’s retirement announcement. A national search was launched in August 2024, attracting 76 applicants from across the country. After a rigorous evaluation, Chief Curtis emerged as the top candidate. He is expected to officially assume the role of Fire Chief at the end of April 2025.
