Fire-Based
EMT-Basic Course


This course provides students with training and education in basic life support (BLS) measures including; bandaging, splinting, oxygen administration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), limited medication administration, and defibrillation. Please email: EMTBASIC if you have questions.


This course also prepares students to:

  • determine the needs at an incident and communicate this information perform scene size-up and determine priorities of care
  • assure personal, patient, crew, and scene safety
  • conduct trauma and medical patient assessment
  • develop a treatment plan, render patient care, and assess its effects
  • lift and move patients in a safe and expeditious manner
    direct and coordinate transport of patients to the appropriate medical facility
  • maintain rapport and act as an advocate with the patient, support agencies, and hospital personnel
  • write detailed records on the emergency care that was performed

The course includes the most recent EMT-B curriculum. Content pertinent to fire-based emergency medical services will be integrated throughout the course. Successful completion of the course will allow the student to sit for the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Basic certification examinations.

  • Registration for the May class will open March 1, 2013.   

Course pre-requisites:
6.1.A: Pre-Requisites: Centura Health-South Denver Group; Prehospital Services Training Group has the following requirements that will be used to determine an applicant's eligibility for acceptance into all of the programs offered. Every student must provide the following documentation prior to the first day of a course:

• A copy of a high school diploma, General Education Development equivalent (GED) or higher degree
• Negative PPD, or chest x-ray for tuberculosis*
• Hepatitis B inoculations: (are in the process of receiving the series, have been certified immune)*
• Evidence of a completed MMR series*
• Evidence of a completed current annual Influenza vaccination*
• Positive Rubella Titer*
• A copy of proof of age (driver’s license, birth certificate)
• A copy of proof of citizenship (driver’s license, U.S. government documentation for legal admission into the U.S. throughout the duration of the EMT class.
• Successfully pass an equivalent background check to the standards of an employee of South Metro Fire Rescue Authority (SMFR) and/or Centura Health
• Admission preference will be given to applicants who provide a letter of support from their local EMS agency
.


****All Immunizations/Vaccinations are required based on safety reasons for our Patients and Students. All copies of immunization records, diplomas, and drivers license may be dropped off to Merilee James at 9195 E. Mineral Ave., Centennial, Colo. Waivers for Religious and/or Medical Exemptions will not be considered/accepted.

OCCUPATIONAL:
Must be at least 18 years of age. Generally, the knowledge and skills required show the need for a high school education or equivalent. Ability to communicate verbally, via telephone and radio equipment; ability to lift, carry and balance up to 125 pounds (250 with assistance); ability to interpret written, oral and diagnostic form instructions; ability to use judgment and remain calm in high-stress situations; ability to work effectively in an environment with loud noises and flashing lights; ability to function efficiently throughout an entire work shift; ability to calculate weight and volumes ratios and read small print, both under threatening time constraints; ability to read and understand English language manuals and road maps; ability to accurately discern street signs and address numbers; ability to interview patient, family members, and bystanders; ability to document, in writing, all relevant information in prescribed format in light of legal ramifications of such; ability to converse in English with coworkers and hospital staff as to status of patient. Good manual dexterity, with ability to perform all tasks related to highest quality patient care. Ability to bend, stoop, and crawl on uneven terrain; and the ability to withstand varied environmental conditions such as extreme heat, cold, and moisture. Ability to work in low light, confined spaces and other dangerous environments.

The course fee is $690 and is required at the time of registration.
The course runs Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 – 10:00 pm; with approximately 4 additional Saturdays. Still have questions? Please email: EMTBASIC
