 LIFE SAFETY BUREAU

Developers, contractors, building managers and owners in the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority service area will partner with our Life Safety Bureau to ensure that all projects meet current fire safety requirements. Our dedicated Bureau staff is divided into two sections: Development and Construction and Code Compliance.  Bureau staff perform new construction plan review and construction site inspections, fire code compliance inspections in existing commercial buildings as well as investigations into the origin and cause of fires.

Even though South Metro Fire Rescue Authority’s Life Safety Bureau is one of the largest in the Denver Metro Area, the entire Bureau staff is dedicated to upholding the philosophy, vision and mission outlined below. Using this framework, as well as providing outstanding support and service to our customers, we feel we have become a model agency in fire prevention.

Philosophy
The Life Safety Bureau (LSB) is primarily responsible for the enforcement of the adopted Codes and Standards throughout the jurisdiction. The Fire Marshal provides general direction and management to the LSB, which is comprised of the “Development and Construction” and “Code Compliance” sections and the Fire Investigation Unit.
Vision
The Life Safety Bureau is committed to developing partnerships with builders, developers, business owners and area code officials to produce and maintain a safe built environment for our citizens, visitors, and firefighters, without unduly impeding business practices or imposing undue burdens.
Seeing ourselves as partners to those we regulate allows the Bureau to be sympathetic to the costs of enforcement and open to alternate methods for achieving building safety.
Mission
The mission of the Life Safety Bureau is to enhance community and firefighter safety through the application of the adopted fire codes, using the “4 E” model:
  • Incorporating engineered design elements into our buildings;
  • Educating our customers as to the value of maintaining these systems and incorporating safe practices within their occupancies;
  • Enforcing the Code when engineering and educational methodologies are unsuccessful; and
  • Regularly evaluating our processes and adopted Codes and Standards.
