BUDGET AND TAX INFORMATION
As a special taxing district, South Metro Fire Rescue levies a property tax of 9.25 mills on residential and commercial properties within its boundaries. An additional levy of .199 mills is placed on properties in Cherry Hills Village to pay retirement benefits for former employees of the Cherry Hills Fire Protection District.
Property taxes for any Colorado special district are figured by multiplying the actual value of the property (as calculated by the county assessor) times an assessment rate set by the state, times the mill levy. In 2006 the assessment rate was 7.96% for residential property and 29% for all other property.
An example: A residence valued at $250,000 x .0796 (residential assessment rate) = $19,900 (assessed value) x .00895 (SMFR mill levy rate) = $178 annual tax bill for fire and rescue services.
Each year the South Metro Fire Rescue Board holds a public hearing on its proposed budget for the coming year. This hearing usually takes place in November or December and is conducted during a board meeting.
