2008 Board Election

Governance

The South Metro Fire Rescue board room during a meeting.South Metro Fire Rescue is a special taxing district established under Title 32 of the Colorado Revised Statutes. As such, it is governed by a publicly-elected five-member Board of Directors.

The board members are: Peter Webb, chair; David Heller, vice-chair; William Schaefer; Michael Hunt, and Dan Travis. Board members are elected to four-year terms and are subject to term limits. Ballots for the next board election have been mailed. Three positions are on the ballot. Two positions are four-year terms and one will be a two-year term. Information provided by the candidates is in this newsletter.

Please note: South Metro does not endorse candidates. Some campaign literature which features our logo could be interpreted as an endorsement but we cannot, by law, make endorsements. A newsletter including information submitted by the candidates was published as an insert in the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News on April 23rd.

On March 18th there was a joint meeting with the Board of Directors of the Parker Fire District. The purpose of the joint meeting was to hear the results of a study on a possble merger between the two agencies. A second joint meeting was held April 24th. Both boards unanimously approved the agreement at that time. More information will be posted on this site in the coming days and weeks. It is our intent to make a better fire deparmtment, not merely a bigger one.

The board meets monthly on the second Thursday of the month, starting at 7:00 p.m, with occasional meetings on the second Thursday of each month. Meetings are held at our administrative offices at 9195 E. Mineral Avenue in Centennial. Exact times and agendas are published on this site's home page.

All meetings are open to the public though the board may go into private (executive) session to discuss legal, personnel issues or other matters as provided by state law. Public comments are welcome at our meetings. If you would like to address the board on a particular subject at a meeting, please let us know by using a sign-up sheet which will be available in the board room. There is a designated public comment period early in the agenda of each regular meeting. Public comments on any subject, outside of the comment period, are taken at the discretion of the board.

Approved minutes from past board meettings are now on-line. Click here to see a list of meeting mintues going back one year. Also, prior to each meeting board members are given a report of acitivities from the previous month, which will also be posted here. As an example, the report for September is presented at the October meeting.
