South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) uniformed Firefighters and Paramedic/Firefighters protect lives and property through their involvement in firefighting, emergency medical care, fire prevention, disaster response, community service and public education. SMFR has 30 (thirty) fire stations that are staffed 24/7 with three shifts working a rotating 48-96 shift schedule. In addition, there are special team opportunities, including: Aircraft firefighting & Rescue (ARFF); Bike Medics; Dive, Ice and Swift Water Rescue; Hazardous Materials; Incident Management Team; SWAT Medic; Technical Rescue; Urban Search & Rescue; Wildland; Pipes & Drums; Explorer Program and Arapahoe Rescue patrol.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)
- Must be 18 years of age by the date of hire
- Valid FireTEAM test scores
- Valid CPAT certificate
- Possess or be able to obtain a Colorado driver’s license Possess and maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with SMFR’s Driving Records Policy
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check, criminal history review, physical, fitness/wellness assessment, medical evaluation, drug screen and psychological exam.

*Any candidates who are selected during the hiring process that do not possess a EMT-B will go through a separate EMT-B course either before or after academy. Candidates who already possess a valid EMT-B will not need to attend the EMT-B course provided by SMFR.

- Valid CPAT certificate
- Current Colorado State Paramedic Certification or National Registry Paramedic Certification.
- Current American Heart Association ACLS Provider.
- Current American Heart Association CPR Provider.
- Possess or be able to obtain a Colorado Driver's License by hire date.
- Possess and maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with SMFR’s Driving Records Policy
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check, criminal history review, physical, fitness/wellness assessment, medical evaluation, drug screen and psychological exam.

SMFR Hiring Process Overview
The following are steps of our Firefighter and/or Firefighter/Paramedic Recruit Academy hiring process and only applicable when positions are available.
Step #1 FIRE TEAM TEST
- A video based test consisting of 4 different components: Human Relations, Math, Mechanical, and Reading. Applicants will watch a video clip and respond to a series of related questions for the Human Relations, Math, and Mechanical components of the test. The Reading component of the test requires applicants read various texts and answer related questions.
- There is a $50 fee to take the FireTEAM test that will be at the candidate’s expense. For information on the testing process with NTN visit: FireTEAM Testing Process

Step #2 CPAT
This test consists of eight events commonly performed in the fire service. It is designed to test a candidates strength and endurance. It is physically demanding and requires the candidate be physically fit to be able to perform essential job tasks and be successful.
Candidates are required to have a valid CPAT certificate through the date of hire. There are numerous testing sites in Colorado. Please see the links below for agencies that offer a CPAT test. *Be advised that all tests need to be accredited through the IAFF.
Aims Community College National Testing Network
APPLICATION
Based on FireTEAM scores, a limited number of candidates will be invited to submit an application.
PARAMEDIC PRACTICALS (PARAMEDIC/FIREFIGHTERS ONLY)
Candidates will be given two hours to rotate through multiple stations to assess their Paramedic knowledge and skill set.
ORAL BOARDS
After applications are submitted, a limited number of candidates will be invited to participate in the Oral Board Process. The Oral Board panel will consist of SMFR personnel of various ranks that will ask behavior based questions. This is an opportunity for us to get to know you as a person and how you would be as member of the SMFR family. Our advice to you for preparation of the oral boards is to BE YOURSELF!
